POETRY STORES: Spring/Summer 2018 Launch

POETRY SPRING/SUMMER2018 LAUNCH

The charming and romantic courtyard at Winchester Mansions was the perfect setting for Poetry’s Spring/Summer 2018 launch, with bougainvillea-laden pillars and a beautiful fountain at its centre piece. The boutique hotel has been updated to modern standards but hasn’t detracted from its historical charm.

Poetry’s wares were displayed on tables around the courtyard, Champagne and canapés flowed before we took our seats to view the fashion show.

I particularly love this pale pink floral dress paired with espadrilles and round bag as an option for a wedding I’m attending next month – I might just go and try it on this week!

Stripes are strong again this season as are wide legged cropped pants.

The collection brings an excitement and romance to modern day travellers for the perfect summer holiday wardrobe with relaxed silhouettes, pretty soft and feminine dresses and jumpsuits, head-to-toe two pieces and colourful swimsuits. Dresses are big this summer, with the focus on prints, summer-kissed ones and pops of yellow and vibrant red.

CONVERSATIONS: Pintuck Resort Swimwear Summer 2018

PINTUCK RESORT

Pintuck Resort is the passion project of fashion editor Jo Springthorpe and swimwear designer Beryl Goslett. I’ve known Jo Springthorpe for many years, in fact, she was the fashion stylist in my modelling days where her impeccable taste was stamped across many local and international titles. Beryl Goslett’s background spans years back in the swimwear industry and together they bring us a fresh approach to swimwear. The patterns, colours and fits are what makes this range so irresistible. I caught up with Jo to find out more about Pintuck Resort.

PINTUCK RESORT

‘Pintuck Resort’s simple concept is to create gorgeous original prints, then pair them with a select range of swimsuit designs that experience has taught us are the most flattering to all women’s bodies. Then we allow the women themselves to play. With our help, our customers can pair the pattern she loves with the suit that suits her!’

What made you decide to get into swimwear?

My work partner Beryl and I were sitting on the beach one December holiday sharing the fact that I could not find a costume for the holidays I liked. Available swimwear at the time was either tiny surf brand bikinis or dowdy ‘granny suits’, nothing that appealed to me. So on my suggestion we made a few swimsuits for ourselves and that is how we started! Our first season was small, growing a little each year and this season we have an extended choice of shapes and prints to choose from.

PINTUCK RESORT

What inspired the name Pintuck Resort?

Pintuck Resort is an extension of a clothing brand I [Jo] already had where I used ‘pintucks’ on shirts and dresses and as people were already familiar with the brand name Pintuck, we added ‘Resort’ to incorporate our swimwear line.

pintuck resort swimwear

PINTUCK RESORT

What makes your swimsuits so attractive?

Most of customers remark on three things: quality, fit and prints. Beryl and I share the same aesthetic so our styles have a retro seventies twist which fit well, are comfortable and flattering. Colour is key so you’ll find some non-commercial colours like greens, oranges and browns in the prints and colours, which we update each season. We use woman of all shapes and sizes in our images to show how the swimwear fits; our hashtag is #foreverybody.

PINTUCK RESORT

Will you be branching into men or kids swimwear?

We have just introduced a small range of swimwear called Petite by Pintuck Resort, suitable for 2-8 year old girls. We’ve also included a small capsule range we’ll be selling at pop ups stalls to see how it is received and take it from there.

PINTUCK RESORT

Tell us about your new range for summer 2018.

Our handwriting of prints are inspired by the bold and beautiful colours of African summers, so for summer 2018 we’ve introduced even bigger, bolder and more fluid designs as well as bright and colourful retro and graphic prints. The addition of bold plain colours like orange, green, gold and red leave one feeling pretty cheerful when looking at them!

PINTUCK RESORT

When’s your next pop up?

We have just had a pop up in Johannesburg this past weekend and our next one in Cape Town on the 26th September, so follow us on Instagramhereand sign up for our newsletter on our website.

PINTUCK RESORT

Where do we find your swimwear?

We supply a few select stores who carry small bespoke ranges but we are concentrating on pop up shops in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Grahamstown and are looking at Durban and other areas too. We also include activewear suitable for yoga, pilates, gym etc.

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD OWN AT LEAST ONE WHITE SHIRT!

CATHI TREVOR

My cupboard largely consists of a black and grey palette with a dash of white, so keeping it tidy is a simple affair. The ‘dash’ stands for an assortment of white shirts I’ve collected over the years, from silk to linen, viscose to cotton, with cuff details and various collars, buttons and embroidery detailing; my ‘go-to’ for everyday wear. If daily laments of “what to wear” resonates with you, a white shirt is the perfect solution to complete an outfit, going with just about everything, from pants to skirts to denims; here’s why every woman should own one (or a couple) white shirts:

” If in doubt, anything looks good with a white shirt!” – Victoria Beckham

Fashion is a way of expressing yourself, and by incorporating relevant trends into everyday wear gives one a peek into your personality. I watched a documentary on Belgium designer Dries Van Noten where he remarked, “the word ‘fashion’ is such an empty word, we’ll have to invent another word for it; fashion is something that’s over in six months, that’s what people consider fashion. I think it’s a word that should mean timeless”. Echoing his sentiments, a white shirt remains a timeless wardrobe essential; whatever you do with your white shirt, if it’s a half tuck into pants, combining a blazer, silk scarf or a pop of colour you are adding your personal touch to it. Whether the detail is in the cuff, the collar, or a simple tailored button up, a white shirt can make one feel uber stylish and chic!

White shirts have graced the covers of many magazines, appearing in countless editorials and worn by icons and celebs throughout the years. Some of my favourite movie moments include Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction kitted out in a long white shirt, cropped black pants and a red lip, whilst Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman wears a Mens white shirt alongside her incredible smile!

Local fashion designer Jenny le Roux of HABITS is renowned for her white shirts. She says “this wonderful staple is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. It’s always timeless and is the quickest shortcut to chic. Essentially the white shirt is a game changer”.

Years ago Elizabeth Taylor remarked that “every woman should have a great white shirt in her wardrobe” and that said, it’s the one item that has really stood the test of time.

PESSO: Handcrafted Footwear & Bags

CATHI TREVOR

I’m not a huge lover of cold weather as I prefer sunshiny days with time spent swimming in the sea, however, there’s one huge yay factor when it comes to winter, layering up with coats, scarves and boots! I’m currently obsessing over my latest PESSO boots; here’s why I love this local brand now available online:

CATHI TREVOR PESSO BOOTS

“A lot of what we design is based on successes from the previous season. As we are a brand focused on “slow, honest fashion” our range tries to always stay true to this ethos. So we will take what we see trending and “Pessonize” it – make it more relevant to the everyday women without losing the integrity and values of the brand” – Lou Holding, PESSO owner and buyer

CATHI TREVOR WEARING PESSO BOOTS

My current two faves are these brown ankle boots with zip side detail and my latest black ankle boots

I’m on my feet for most of the day, dressing and styling models, so footwear is important to me, for comfort and of course to look good too. Shoes really make a huge difference in one’s ‘tired factor’ and for that reason I keep a pair of sneakers in the studio incase I’ve opted on wearing heels, which aren’t the most practical to run around in, (but who doesn’t love a pair of heels to make one feel fabulous?) I’ve been really spoilt being sent some lovelies from PESSO and experiencing no blisters or chafing, just a pleasure of wearing super comfortable fabulous shoes!

PESSO BOOTS

These boots are made for walking!!

PESSO leather boots, shoes and bags are now available online shop here and in Step Ahead and Shoe Connection countrywide. I was sent a voucher to shop online where the entire shopping experience was effortless, (the hardest part was deciding which pair of boots to choose!) which arrived within two days!

CATHI TREVOR WEARING PESSO BOOTS

Ankle boots are huge this season and can be worn with just about everything including dresses, skirts, jeans, jumpsuits and pants; pop on a pair of stockings (fishnet on trend) or socks (colourful or glittery) to finish off your look.

THE ENVY: Jewellery collection

Bella wears Oblong resin earrings R350

On Muizenberg Main Road you’ll find SOBEIT STUDIO , crammed full of amazing things from lighting, to furniture to fabulous decor pieces; the studio’s desire: “to make the ordinary obsolete”, worth another blogpost, but in the meantime, I spied this lovely jewellery range “THE ENVY”, created by Liezle Van Vuuren. Her gorgeous daugher Bella, modelled these lovelies for me; read more on Liezle’s collection:

“Holy bejeweled desire comes in the shape of wholly original bangles, necklaces, pendants and rings” – THE ENVY

How long you’ve been creating, what did you do beforehand and why did you go into Jewellery designing?:

I’ve been creating for 21 years! I studied at the Design Academy of Fashion before dabbling around in the fashion industry working on a children’s range. My husband Bartél, started making moulds to use when working with resin, and one day made a mould of a bangle and the rest is history! As I’ve always been jewellery obsessed, I decided to follow my passion and started creating jewellery as a side line while doing an office job. In 2011 we officially launched our brand Sobeit Studio at the Design Indaba and now do jewellery designing full time.

Resin Hoop Earrings R350

Self taught or studied Jewellery design?

I’m completely self taught. Bartel is an expert on resin so I’ve learned a lot from him. I’ve done loads of book research to online jewellery manufacturing communities. I am also very lucky to have a jeweller friend that freely gives me his time and advise whenever I ask him.

How would you describe your style?

This is always such a hard thing for me to answer but bright and bold hold the most appeal; I prefer creating big pieces and as I always like to say, “ I don’t do Itsy – Bitsy!”

What inspires you?

The materials I work with and designing and creating items that I would wear myself.

What mediums do you prefer working with?

I work with silver, brass and semi-precious stones and resin, which I find is such a versatile medium. I started off by casting resin into moulds and currently working on new pieces using a CNC router. I get very excited when a piece is finished to perfection!

Where are your pieces currently available?

My jewellery is available from our SOBEIT STUDIO in Muizenberg, as well as on Hello Pretty

and at St.Siena in Kalk Bay.

Resin half moon earrings R350

If not designing what do you like to do?

Definitely spending time with my family and to read, read, read!

PICHULIK: AUTUMN/WINTER2018 COLLECTION

Inspired by colours of the passing landscape whilst driving through the Cedarberg, PICHULIK designer Katherine-Mary noticed the stark contrast between barren stretches versus lush green pastures and decided to incorporate the subtle hues into her latest Autumn/Winter2018 jewellery & clothing collection, titled Talisman for Rain:

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

Earthy tones of fern and Amazon green hand woven knits and beadwork used by designer Nadya von Stein, mixed with two toned green, malachite and mottled green serpentine are the dominant colours interwoven together.

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

‘I wanted to create pieces that double as totems and talismans totems because they define a tribe or social group and are artefacts that bind certain people together, and talismans because they are imbued with the power to bring something about or ward something off. I wanted the pieces to have an ancient, sacred feel,’ Pichulik says of the design process. ‘Because totems are assembled of elements that carry spiritual reverence or depict family legends, sacred beings and culturally significant animals, people or historical events, she says.

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

‘The autumn/winter18 earrings and necklaces such as Earth Mother mimic this. The team worked with layers of jade and cattle horn, both of which symbolise Earth in Celtic cultures. The simple, voluptuous Erzulie pendant and earrings take their name from Erzulie, the Haitian goddess of love, who shares a name with the Yaruban river goddess. Similarly, PICHULIK’s Mama Wata earrings take their cue (and name) from the water spirit Mama Wata (Mother Water), who is celebrated through much of Africa’.

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

The collection features PICHULIK’s trademark yacht rope to which the team

has added real and faux malachite, serpentine, red jasper, freshwater pearls,

Transvaal jade and brass. It brings together the two distinct styles that have

emerged in Pichulik’s work over the last three seasons: the heavy handbeaded designs of the Habibi collection and the pared down geometric shapes as seen in the Harvest collection.

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

‘We have begun to define and refine our ranges to offer a premium seasonal

collection while continually updating the Ndebele and Classics ranges that

embody PICHULIK’s origins,’ says Pichulik. ‘The Talisman for Rain collection, like

all our work, is first and foremost a celebration of hand craft and all items

goes through two workshops before they are complete, from casting the wax moulds for components to handwrapping them.’It also introduces the brand’s new disc rings designed to be stacked with any PICHULIK ring to create a strong, personalised hand adornment.

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

True to the brand DNA, Talisman is inspired by and created for strong women,

a message that is brought across by You Are Enough, the slogan that has become part of every new PICHULIK collection. ‘As women, our greatest shortcoming is the belief that we are not enough. Everything in our lives are determined by this and I want our jewellery to remind women that they are enough; that being worthy does not stem from something superficial and

cosmetic but is woven into our souls. It is something no one can take away from us.’

#PICHULIKBYNADYA

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018

For winter, designer Nadya von Stein has echoed PICHULIK’s greens in the handwoven knits and beadwork of her garments. #PichulikbyNadya’s commitment to sustainable design is all the more significant with this collection’s focus on water. The predominant fabric is, as before, hemp, a

plant that is far less thirsty than conventional crops used to make fibre.

Their winter suit is made from knitted organic hemp melange and the high waisted trousers and matching jersey top and jacket incorporate PICHULIK’s half moon cut out. A standout new piece is the organic hemp stretch T-shirt emblazoned with PICHULIK’s talisman for rain using a combination of gold foiling, handpainting and beading. ‘I wanted to create something fresh, to evoke the feeling you get when a long dry spell has been broken and the sweet, fresh, powerful smell of the earth after the first rains,’ says Von Stein.

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018 & MISSIBABA

Pichulik worked with other powerful women, strong brands and creatives. ‘We worked with Missibaba to create two bags in line with the totemic earrings. We also commissioned Nabeeha Mohamed, a painter, artist and #pichulikwoman, to create a drawing which we are going to use in the storytelling together with totem illustrations by Ruschka du Toit.’

PICHULIK JEWELLERY & CLOTHING A/W2018 & MISSIBABA

About Missibaba

Missibaba is a Cape Town based, luxury accessory label founded by leather devotee Chloe Townsend. Dedicated to empowering women, the Missibaba family is 18 women strong. Their

accessories radiate an exotic exuberance with a flair for colour and texture and continuously push

the boundaries of imagination. As slow fashion enthusiasts, the consummate team behind the

Missibaba brand takes the time to meticulously hand craft each unique piece with patience and love. Passionate about South Africa and supporting the local industry, Missibaba invests in developing the team’s skills and is involved in upliftment and skills sharing programme in communities from Stellenbosch to Nairobi.

Quote from Chloe Townsend

“Collaborating with Pichulik felt very natural. Our brands share a similar visual

language and ethos with both offerings complementing and enhancing the beauty of all materials used. We both seek to celebrate women and the feminine, sharing this joy, love and strength through our pieces. Missibaba used locally sourced leather in earthy tones that embody a call for rain throughout this collection”.

FASHION: STATEMENT SOCK TREND

Far from being boring, socks are an exciting and relatively cheap accessory to lift one’s wardrobe into looking uber cool. As seen on International Leisure Travel themed runways, socks are everywhere and worn with absolutely everything; Prada’s scalloped and feminine skirts were paired with knee-high soccer socks while Gucci’s logo printed socks were worn with metallic pumps or loafers; Valentino sported striped socks worn beneath T-strap sandals and Stella McCartney took one step further including an 85% upcycled pair of her new sustainable socks accompanying her Autumn 2018 show’s invitation, to raise awareness of sustainability in the fashion industry. Scroll down for sock inspiration and check out some of our local sock brands who are making a statement!
