“If art serves as a mirror to our civilization, what truer way is there to reflect in our zeitgeist, than to examine art in its closer form to us- in fashion and textiles, says Amy Lyn Eveleigh, Curator.

“Fashion and textile design is adept at fulfilling a traditional function of art by reflecting changes in contemporary culture. As much as art, fashion is a manifestation of the times- of its psychological social political and visual existence.
It has played an integral role in human expression and over the years has woven its way into contemporary art practice, says Amy. ” Fashion has become the medium for social commentaries by means of cultural belonging, sometimes aversion, a way to dismantle societal norms or ways of confronting the constructs that the clothes in which we are dressed impose.”

ILLUSTRATOR & ANIMATOR: FRAN LABUSCHAGNE

Another exciting find on Instagram is local illustrator and animator Fran Labuschagne who captures excerpts of life with playful themes combined with a wonderful sense of humour. On one of her posts she introduces herself as “Hi, I’m Fran. I draw characters in strange proportions and use the colour pink a lot”. I LOVE that don’t you? I thought I’d share some of her lovelies on my blog today:

JANUARY RAMBLINGS of a blogger

JANUARY RAMBLINGS

I cannot believe a month has already flown by and New Year’s Resolutions are still ringing in my ears. I have yet to complete my list of “things to do”, but decided I would take a moment to breathe, drink a cup of coffee and contemplate the day…how about you?

The past six weeks has been filled with family gatherings, lounging around the pool, (I need to invest in a pool covering as the water level has dropped somewhat rapidly this past week with the wind pumping), but for now I don’t mind a shallow dip when the heat gets too much! In an earlier post I mentioned planting a veggie garden that’s flourishing, thanks to grey water, maybe?

My son left for Vietnam on Monday and besides a heavy sad heart, it was absolutely wonderful having him spend most of the holidays on our turf. He’s an incredible human being and I’ll miss him enormously, but he’s gone to teach English for a year or two so more time can be spent with his other half who flies for Emirates. Luckily my daughter still lives in Cape Town, so in between her busy schedule we go for coffee, movies and play Bananagram! She’s busy working on an exhibition collaboration happening in February, yet still found the time to make this top for my birthday, how nice?! #happymama

I attended a retreat last weekend, a gentle reminder of being grateful, grounded and to practice mindfulness. I’m getting a bit better at morning time management to include yoga and meditation, but sometimes I find myself staring out at the sun rising over the ocean as time ticks by and… it’s okay… I’m trying not to beat myself up if I falter with my routine every now and then, because I’m not Miss Perfect, but I still wish I was you know?

Mornings are still filled with anxiousness as to whether the trains will pitch on time or not; yes, it would be less stressful to drive the twenty-five minutes in before peak traffic, but I’m trying to keep my carbon footprint to a minimal. It also helps to have a GARMIN (a birthday pressie I love, as it’s a great incentive to walk and be more active, reminding you every now and then to “MOVE!” But really, this year is about taking care of ourselves a little more, for our health, soul and mind, without feeling so goddamn guilty about it!

We’ve had a couple of days twiddling our thumbs at work waiting for merchandise to arrive. As from tomorrow we’re going full steam ahead which is exciting, as it’s good to keep busy! I have a team of wonderful free-spirited millennials who every now and then need a gentle reminder about time management, but other than that, it’s going to be a fun-filled year of teaching them to work on new machines across all mediums; styling models and mannequins, to shooting loads of stills as well as styling food, bedding and even flowers!

This last week of January includes a much-anticipated concert by Julia and Angus Stone, an Australian band performing at Kirstenbosch, my daughter’s birthday tomorrow and Friday is payday! Yay! So that’s it for this month – how’s your January been?

BACK TO REALITY: 2018 Here we come!

new year resolutions 2018

Can you believe we are into the second week of January and as I said in my last post on tackling New Years Resolutions, I’m trying to be more mindful and conscious every day and keeping lists to small do-able ones to work through. These were some things I wanted to tackle by the end of my vacation and yay, I ticked these ones off this week, including planting a veggie garden, sprucing up my dining room chairs, starting a new yoga regime and getting into cooking!

You may think cooking? big deal, but paging through recipe books was as far as my interest went and as I’ve been fortunate enough to have a hubby who loves to cook, I’ve happily refrained from anything more than making salads.

My change of tune is largely attributed to my friend Cheryl Stevens who is the most amazing cook, creating wholesome healthy foods and snacks; check out her Instagram here; I am no shakes on her, but she has inspired me to eat healthier and to start cooking! Having my son to stay for the past few weeks has me thinking about consuming dairy as he is vegan. Living a vegan way of life is not for the fainthearted as you have to read every single ingredient on packaging and really be conscious about what you eat. Although it’s been a huge eye opener on what goes into my body, I won’t be taking on the whole vegan way of life just yet, but small steps, replacing butter and milk with coconut or almond milk and using coconut oil for just about everything, and no, I still go out for regular cuppaccinos!

Cooking has been fun, but baking is more so! I decided to start bringing healthy snacks to work and went with date balls as they are so easy peasy adn healthy too! My son found a recipe on The Pretty Blog and boy, are they delish! I added ground almonds to the mixture for a crunchy texture.

healthy sugar free date balls

Yummi sugar-free date balls

Despite being in the midst of a hectic water shortage, I planted a veggie and herb garden. It’s right outside our kitchen door for easy access, using grey water as well as filling bottles from the mountainside. We have access to two water points in St James and one scrappy one off Boyes Drive, where water runs straight into the sea, so until someone comes up with an initiative to capture the water, I join the queue to fill up bottles for my garden.
So far they’re looking good, don’t you think?

VEGETABLE GARDEN

Another item on my list was to give my dining room chairs a makeover; while I was away housesitting husband did the job for me so no before pics but here is what they look like now- a lick of white paint and covered in a grey linen. I would like to change them for something different, but for now they are fab!

REUPHOLSTERED CHAIRS

My son Chris has also put me into a good morning routine of practicing yoga. My only form of exercise is walking and swimming and although I’ve joined gyms oodles of times only to fail dismally at keeping up, I decided it was easier to do something for home before heading out to work. I have yet to see how this works out as I’m off to my day job tomorrow, so I shall report back, but in the meantime… Chris also gave me a Fitbit type of gadget from work; I was part of a study they did and I got to keep the gadget, a fab incentive to monitor my heartbeat and steps. It’s not as great as a GARMIN ( hubby got one for his birthday form son and I’m a wee bit jellies at all the stats it offers you, but the one I have is perfect for what I am needing!) I’ve exhausted myself writing about this all, so I shall make myself a rooibos tea and go and chill for the rest of the afternoon as tomorrow, it’s back to reality!

Let me know if you have done any exciting things relating to New Year’s resolutions, big or small that you would like to share?

Happy day and happy week!

New Year Resolutions: 2018

happpiness quote

LETS ROLL IN THE NEW YEAR

Hello, 2018 and HAPPY NEW YEAR! I usually compile my “to-do” list on the first of January, yet despite my best intentions by the second week I’ve fallen behind and at a loss as to what I am supposed to be focusing on. Does this resonate with you? Well bye bye to another year of unrealistic resolutions; here’s what I shall be doing instead.

mindfulness & gratitude

Juggling a full time job, a blog, being a wife and mama in-between mundane chores of everyday life to putting more pressure on ourselves to work harder, train harder, be more and do more, is highly demanding and can be really stressful trying to be Miss Superwoman, something I wish I was but realistically I am just not her, however hard I try!

minfulness & gratitude

So this year I’m focusing on things that speak from the heart and way more attainable, like practising mindfulness, compassion, gratitude and living in each moment whole heartedly. I’m going to spend more time with family and friends, as life is fragile and short and in a moment things can change completely, where I don’t want to be left wondering what if, why didn’t I… It’s time to be kind and gentle to ourselves and to others. So this is it, a new day and year to practice mindfulness, gratitude and being in the moment completely. I’m excited to do this, how about you?Do you have any resolutions you would like to share with me, however big or small?

TAJ HOTEL: JIVA SPA ⎨REVIEW⎬

TAJ HOTEL SPA FACILITIES

HEAVENLY TOUCH

Is there anything more sublime than a delicious massage in the middle of the week? TAJ HOTEL invited me to experience a relaxing massage at their JIVA SPA. Situated in the heart of Cape Town and within walking distance from my work space, I’ve frequented the TAJ HOTEL for various beauty launches over the years and one thing I really love about it is the gentle whiff of Indian Jasmine fragrance that fill your senses upon entering the foyer. Don’t you love it when spaces pay attention to details like that?

Taj Hotel Cape Town

JIVA SPA - TAJ HOTEL

JIVA SPAS offer a variety of wonderful Indian wellness treatments, creating lifestyle awareness and understanding of the mind, body and spirit. I was taken to the spa on the first floor, where one steps into a quiet, calm and peaceful environment with low lights and soothing music. (Sometimes those pan flutes can get the better of you in some spas, so I was happy to say the music choice is non intrusive.) My therapist Sesethu, gently washed my feet before taking me to one of the spa treatment rooms for my massage.

taj hotel jiva spa

I almost nodded off to sleep as her firm hands worked magic at releasing knots in my neck and shoulders; the tension of a frenetic week slipping away. Almond, Frankincense and Indian Jasmine oils are used for the massage, a heavenly combination for a detoxifying and relaxing experience. Afterwards I was led to a chilling area where I snacked on a huge platter of freshly prepared fruits and iced water. I could have spent an extra hour lolling around like a princess, but as it’s almost the end of another year, I had to rush off – another day perhaps when time allows. Sometimes I feel really guilty for this “me time”, but I’m learning to accept that it’s important to re-energize and revitalize ourSelves and our souls. So find the time and book that massage!

Happy Friday!

BRUSH STROKES

Looking at the gentle washes of colour by 21 year old French illustrator Cecile, aka COUCOU_ILLUSTRATOR, on subjects like pugs, foxes, flowers and more really makes my heart happy. So young, fresh and talented! I’m deciding on a purchase, but can’t decide which one as they are all just so lovely!

coucou illustrations

On her illustrations Cecile says, “I post my illustrations on social media under the name ‘Coucou Illustrations’.’Coucou’ is a French word I always use to say hi, (it is a bit childish, but I love it!). I find it kind and warm and comforting. I really wanted my illustrations to get the feeling of friendliness and happiness, so I decided to use this name. I really enjoy faded colours, simple shapes and patterns – though, once in a while, I like to let aside my watercolours and use my coloured pencils for a bolder, more colourful drawing. I also like to play with black and white drawings and add bits of colour here and there, to let some elements pop out. I like to think my drawings can sometimes look like old pictures, with these greyish colours. At least, that’s what I try to create most of the time!”

I rounded up some of the ones I really love – take a peek!

SANTA SHOEBOX PROJECT

santa shoebox project

The malls are heavily laden with decorations and Christmas carols are merrily playing; reminders that Christmas is a mere 21 days away! A few weekends ago we went to help wrap presents for Santa Shoebox and I was fortunate to interview this incredible lady Debbie Zelezniak, Chief Operating Manager for the Santa Shoebox Project. She says, “If you missed the cut-off date for wrapping a shoebox or two, consider donating here.” Read on for more insight on this amazing cause.

Debbie Zelezniak, Chief Operating Manager for Santa Shoebox Project

From humble beginnings of 180 shoeboxes, The Santa Shoebox Project has grown over the last 11 years with the number of donated Santa Shoeboxes up to a total of 652 180! The shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia. The success of the project can largely be attributed to its personal nature, where donors give gifts to children whose names, ages and genders are known. The project is supported by a vast network of kind-hearted volunteers across South Africa and Namibia. It relies on the generous backing of various corporate sponsors pledging monetary or pro bono support. Many companies, involving their staff members pledge Santa Shoeboxes as part of their Corporate Social Investment programmes.
