BEAUTY REVIEW: Filorga Skin -Unify Intensive Serum

filorga skin-unify intensive

Filorga skin-unify intensive

I came across Filorga a few years back and was drawn to their packaging in black and white tubs with bold, sleek lettering. I love aesthetically pleasing products, and I know it shouldn’t be about first impressions, but it’s like choosing a book- I’m biased and go by its cover! On a serious note, French brand Filorga is packed with anti-ageing ingredients with clinically proven results and their products suit my age and skin type, so again, I was delighted to be given Filorga Skin-Unify Intensive Illuminating Even Skin Tone Serum to try out; my thoughts…

Tailored to even out complexion and reduce dark spots with an added benefit of illuminating skin, Filorga Skin-Unify Intensive is inspired by aesthetic medicine like laser and peel treatments.

Key ingredient Vitamin C helps boost collagen production, protects skin from free radicals and targets and lightens dark spots.
A peptide called Tetrapeptide contains antioxidant and antipollution properties which help combat a dull complexion by dealing with the effects of impurities.
Encapsulated hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps skin, helps reflect more light which leads to a smoother radiant complexion.

Filorga Skin-Unify Intensive Serum

I started using it about four weeks ago; the last week I’ve been in bed getting over Covid (I would have thought it was the normal flu which I generally get at this time of year as the weather hovers between warm and cool but as I had to go and test for work it came back positive). I’m not that great at keeping up with beauty routines when I’m feeling under the weather but I vigilantly continued as the serum is light-weight and light-textured meaning it sinks in quickly, is non-greasy and contains no alcohol or parabens.

Do I notice anything different?

If my teammates are anything to go by, commenting how rested and how my skin was glowing! (Was it due to a delicious week of rest, a boost of vitamin intake of C, D and Zinc,? I’d like to think it’s thanks to the former combination plus Filorgas Skin -Unify Intensive Serum as my skin does look and feel smooth and radiant! Would I use it again? Incorporating a serum into my beauty regime is a yes and a brand I am super happy with!

Filorga Skin-Unify Intensive Serum is available R1070 at justclinicskin here

That’s it for now but let me know if you’ve tried this one out or any Filorga products and your thoughts?

Happy Friday and weekend

OUT OF LINE: Filorga’s Time-Filler Intensive Wrinkle Multi-Correction Serum

I’ve been pleading wrinkle ignorance by simply avoiding getting too close to the bathroom mirror. My plan was foiled recently, however, during an eyebrow dyeing session, where my reading glasses magnified everything for me! I know nothing will magically whip wrinkles away, and they’re part of who I am but, damn, my heart still races for a good serum and moisturiser that promises to help slow things down a bit!

I was lucky enough to be sent Filorga’s Time-Filler Intensive Wrinkle Multi-Correction Serum to test out, and so far I’m absolutely loving it.

Did you know that neck wrinkles are said to be becoming more prevalent and at a younger age, as a result of hours spent looking at a phone? Filorga’s serum is for both face and neck, to combat a range of different types of wrinkles, including contraction, surface, dryness and neck wrinkles.

Serums are an essential part of a beauty regime. They have extra beneficial anti-ageing properties and work more effectively with a day or night cream; ( one doesn’t have to only use one brand for your face). I’m a beauty junkie from my magazine days where we’d get to try out tons of creams and serums, from all sorts of different brands and I have never experienced any major break-outs from mixing and matching brands.

I’ve noticed an increase in fine lines around the mouth and cheek areas so I seek out products with active ingredients in them. This serum contains hyaluronic acid and two peptides, which help with loss of density and structure to the skin, boosting cell turnover and collagen. Sea fennel extract and Imperata cylindrica root extract help with these concerns too, plus they add a youthful plumpness to your skin.

Neck wrinkles? Another active ingredient called kangaroo paw flowers which increases the synthesis of Tenascin-X, addresses any saggy neck concerns. I also love another fab ingredient called hexapeptide that mimics Botox-like actions of relaxing and smoothing frown lines, crows feet and muscle contractions.

Commenting on the latest addition to the Time-Filler range, Filorga’s International Medical Advisor, Dr Riekie Smit says, ‘Time-Filler Intensive is a powerful and very effective anti-wrinkle serum that provides observable result in a little as seven days with maximised results noticed after eight weeks’.

Filorga Time-Filler retails at R870 for 30ml and available from the following online retailers:

Have you tried Filorga products and if so what are your thoughts?

BEAUTY REVIEW: Pradiance Supreme C+ Serum

Serums are an absolute essential in one’s daily beauty routine and I’ve only recently come across Pradiance Supreme C+ Serum Rose Hip Vitamin A, C & E with an incredible texture that feels superbly decadent; here’s why I’m loving this local brand…

“Inspired by the moon and its endless cycle of renewal, the ‘Pradiance Way’ is about the connection to nature and the regenerative power it provides. We consider the 28 day skin cycle, which happens to be the same as the moons’ cycle”

One of the ingredients  in Pradiance Supreme C+ Serum is Kigelia Africana Fruit Powder;  local healers have been treating skin problems for centuries by using the fruit of the Kigelia tree which is high in antioxidants and contains anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties and has the remarkable ability to restore skin’s firmness and improve the elasticity of the skin.

Other ingredients found in the serum is  Sweet Almond oil, which contains Vitamin A to smooth fine lines, Vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids to help reduce the UV damage to the skin and zinc, an essential nutrient for healing acne.

Rosehip Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants and important for regenerating skin as well as a wonder oil  for reduction of scars and fine lines.

“Good for you and our earth”

To sum up Pradiance Supreme C+ Serum in one sentence – instant relief for my dry skin mature skin with a sublime  texture which  sinks in quickly- and the knowledge it is free of parabens, mineral oils, synthetic chemicals and animal testing and most NB is it is a local brand available online here

REVIEW: Eucerin Hyaluron Filler Moisture Booster

Eucerin Hyaluron Filler Moisture Booster

I spend most of my day in a studio and reliant on aircon;  winter is a blessing as we crank up the temperature but now with spring I’m constantly flipping the aircon dial as it’s either too hot or too cold so it wreaks havoc on my skin. Eucerin Hyaluron Filler Moisture Booster was sent to me and as my skin has been feeling super dehydrated I did a little jump for joy for a ‘moisture booster’; here’s what I thought….

One of the best ingredients to look for when it comes to anti-ageing is Hyaluronic acid as it plumps and hydrates skin, thanks to its ability to hold over one thousand times its weight in water meaning it can hydrate and plump skin fabulously.

Eucerin Hyaluron Filler Moisture Booster

The other main ingredient is Glycerin which hydrates skin and helps hold on to moisture. Glycerin enhances the penetration of other ingredients, strengthens skins moisture barrier and improves skins resilience.

Eucerin Hyaluron Filler Moisture Booster

My thoughts:

As I said my skin leans towards being dehydrated, so including this into my daily routine was brilliant; the light texture serum feels a little sticky at first but sinks in super fast delivering immediate hydration. It is also clinically and dermatologically proven. (See chart below with results)

Eucerin Hyaluron Filler Moisture Booster is suitable as a makeup base, is clinically and dermatologically proven, non-comedogenic and appropriate for all skin types. It also has a good price point of ZAR299.99 available at Clicks

That’s it for today….

REVIEW: Afari Skincare

I’ve tested out many cleansers over the years but Afari Skincare‘s Priming Cleanser is an outstanding one, made even more so as I know how much love, time and passion has gone into creating this luxe local brand. Margaux Knuppe  is the founder of Afari Skincare (you can read an interview I wrote earlier in the year here). I tried out their Priming Cleanser and Protecting Day Cream SPF30:

In a continent recognised for its rich heritage of traditional healers, and its wealth of naturally restorative elements and biodiversity, we embarked on a journey to find an indigenous botanical with regenerative skin benefits

I’m always looking for multi-purpose products to both save me time but also (and more importantly) address my skin concerns like collagen production, hydration, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. The key ingredient in all Afari Skincare products is an indigenous shrub that grows naturally in the Limpopo region. The sap contains soothing and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used for generations by traditional healers for skin ailments.

A great synthesis between female harvesters in rural Limpopo and ground-breaking scientific research led to the discovery of Bulbine frutescens, a small shrub indigenous to the dry valleys of Southern Africa

‘Decadently lush’ are words that spring to mind when using this cleanser. My skin feels pampered after using the gel formula that lathers up easily and smells pretty damn fine too!

The day cream sinks in easily, contains a protecting high SPF and is safe to use around the sensitive eye area.

My approach to applying products can be a bit heavy-handed, which means I go through my creams and serums way too quickly. We actually don’t need gallons of product on our faces, so I love Afari‘s airless pump bottles, which dispense just the right amount. An airless pump reduces the amount of oxygen entering the bottle which makes your product last longer, plus it means less preservatives are needed. And there’s no need to grab scissors to squeeze out your last drops!

Because the 100% recyclable, earth-friendly containers don’t need gravity to dispense the product, there is no chance of spillage from the nozzle. So one day when we’re allowed to travel again and/or head to the gym, they’re perfect for popping in your bag!

Afari Skincare products are available online here

PS I have a feeling Bulbine frutescens is going to be the next beauty must-have ingredient…watch this space!

Happy Thursday

CONVERSATIONS with AFARI Skincare Founder Margaux Knuppe

I’ve adored using AFARI, a luxe local skincare brand containing incredible anti-ageing properties thanks to a breakthrough ingredient; I caught up with Margaux Knuppe founder of AFARI skincare on her luxury brand:

Margaux Knuppe founder of AFARI skincare

Founder of AFARI skincare collection,Margaux Knuppe

The inspiration behind your brand
As a time-poor, working mum, I was looking for an anti-ageing range that addressed all the major ageing concerns, (fine lines, wrinkles, dehydration, enlarged pores, pigmentation and dullness) in as few products as possible. Plus, I wanted to support the local industry and empower women while doing so.

Female harvesters in rural Limpopo

In 2014, I was invited on Sean Privett’s Fynbos Trail in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Learning that there are 8000+ species of plants in South Africa, of which 6000 are endemic meant one thing to me: opportunity! How can we only know about the skin repairing properties of Rooibos and Buchu? Surely there had to be another species indigenous to South Africa, with incredible skincare benefits? I was on a mission to find this unknown botanical as I wanted to showcase it to the rest of the world.

AFARI Skincare range

Key ingredient Bulbine frutescens – the next big buzzword in beauty?

If the clinical trials and AFARI customer reviews are anything to go by, absolutely! The fact that Bulbine is indigenous to South Africa further spotlights SA as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. And, in the plant-based, raw ingredient industry, which is so crucial to the skincare industry, this translates as a LOT of opportunity. Now that I have the ingredient, with the clinical results to back it up, as well as the fact that it’s being sustainably farmed by female harvesters who directly benefit from the sales, it’s a matter of showcasing AFARI to the rest of the world.

bulbine frutescens

Four products in your collection-any more in the pipeline

I wanted to create a skincare regime that tackled the signs of ageing in as few products as possible: three steps in the morning (Priming Cleanser, Brightening Elixir, Day Cream SPF30) and three in the evening (Priming Cleanser, Brightening Elixir and Overnight Regenerating Cream). If I were to add another product I’d look at an enzymatic exfoliator and a line-plumping mask.

A personal favourite
I’m with the 5-star review rating on this one (and the fact that it has the highest amount of Bulbine in it) ,I’m never without the AFARI Brightening Elixir.

Was there a time during your research you wanted to give up
After two years of trying to source indigenous ingredients that ‘didn’t exist” and being told on countless occasions I was looking for a needle in a haystack, the cosmetic chemist and I decided to rather focus on a luxury anti-ageing range under my name. This wasn’t the first prize for me, but luckily time was on my side – I had a corporate day job and was building AFARI at night.

A few months later I heard from the cosmetic chemist again who had just returned from an annual raws ingredients expo in Paris. He had met a farmer from Limpopo who had just finished clinical trials on a brand new, indigenous raw ingredient called Bulbine frutescens. I think if AFARI hadn’t been my side hustle for so long, I would have given up after a few months or been able to finance this venture without my day job!

harvesters for afari skincare range

Each Afari product sold directly benefits the women harvesting the plants in rural Limpopo, South Africa. As an Afari customer, you keep this circle of upliftment flowing.

You’re empowering a group of women in Limpopo – tell us more

Our key ingredient is Bulbine frutescens sourced from an organic farm in rural Limpopo, where it is sustainably cultivated by female harvesters from the local community. Each AFARI product sold directly benefits these women harvesters, their families and the greater community. As an AFARI customer, you keep this circle of upliftment flowing.

Tell us about the packaging?

Another thing that was important to me was to find airless pumps for the packaging. Even though jars are perceived as premium, oxygen and bacteria get in each time you open the jar which degrades active ingredients. I wanted to ensure the AFARI skincare collection is as effective from the first pump right down to the last pump in the bottle.

I desperately want to use recyclable plastic pump bottles or glass would be first prize. Sadly they don’t make airless pump bottles in glass and recyclable plastic is prohibitively expensive, but as soon as I can produce in volume I can afford to look at more recycle friendly packing options – crazy isn’t it?

Where can one purchase

AFARI is only available online for now shop here and from mid-2020 we’ll be shipping internationally too. I’m headed to the US and UK so hopefully we’ll start seeing AFARI in some international retailers in the not too distant future.

Follow AFARI:

I’ll be doing another post shortlywhere I’ll talk about the AFARI products I’ve used and loved!

Until then, happy Monday…all day!!

Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide capsules

When it comes to capsule skin care Elizabeth Arden wins hands down; their Ceramide capsules have been around since the nineties and last year a high performance Retinol capsule launched and now, its newest innovation Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum have dropped and they sure pack a powerful punch!

Vitamin C is a highly effective ingredient for skincare and Elizabeth Arden have used their innovative capsule technology to create a serum that is 178 times more potent than traditional vitamin C. As Vitamin C is known for its unstable properties, Elizabeth Arden have solved the problem of packaging the serum by encapsulation which has been proven to prolong the stability of ingredients. It is an oil soluble formula to complement the skin’s moisture barrier (rather than traditional water-soluble Vitamin C), which means it lasts longer and is also able to penetrate skin better.

If brighter, even toned and radiant skin is what you’re after, Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum with their winning formula are well worth incorporating into your beauty routine. So what are the key ingredients?

CERAMIDES: Helps protect skin against loss of moisture and help keep the glow

VITAMINC C: Easily absorbed, ultra stable and helps with pigmentation communication

CLARY SAGE: Soothes and protects skin against free radicals

VITAMIN E: Supports Vitamin C efficacy and prolongs potency

EMOLIENT OILS: Helps repair and protect skin

AVOCADO, SUNFLOWER SEED & OLIVE OILS: Impart skin with moisturising and skin conditioning benefits

Results show that after one application, 86% of women saw an instant improvement in skin radiance and luminosity, while in clinical studies 97% of women saw a clinical reduction in the appearance of dark spots, and 100% of women showed a 78% clinical improvement in skin tone*. Not too shabby for stats, agree?

I like the four P’s which sum up the capsules perfectly!

PURE: hermetically sealed to keep active ingredients fresh, no added preservatives

POTENT: water-free formulated means a higher concentration of active ingredient

PRECISE: Pre-measured mono-dose that takes the guesswork out of skincare

POWERFUL monodies preserves the efficacy of active ingredients

I’m a huge fan of capsules as the mono-dose means the perfect amount with no wastage, allows for a more targeted treatment, addresses dullness and brightness, are travel friendly as no spillage, take up zip zero space and best of all the capsules are biodegradable. As I said, the capsules are super easy to work into your existing beauty routine and I generally use them between a moisturiser and sunscreen; just a heads up – the consistency is a little runnier than the other capsules, so be careful when twisting off the top. They have a satiny finish that is non oily =LOVE!

Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules  Radiance Renewal Serum

Have you tried these out yet? Let me know what you think.

Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum available at all Elizabeth Arden counters

REVIEW: Four Super Nourishing Hand Creams

cowshed, mincer, woolworths and morgan taylor hand creams

It’s hard to avoid the inevitable dry hands in winter problem, as because it’s impossible to scroll while wearing gloves, they’re always exposed to the elements. Cranking up the car heater on a daily basis and the cool, crisp air adds to the dry factor and is detrimental to your skin. I’ve been putting these four hand creams to good use; here’s why I’m loving them:

Cowshed Cow Slip Soothing Hand cream with sweet orange & peppermint

I’ve written about Cowshed before and I’ll sing their praises yet again; not only because they are organic, have witty headers but the botanical and essential oils smell absolutely delicious (read more on my earlier post here). They also make for great gifts!

Cowshed Cow Slip Soothing Hand Cream sits in my bathroom as it’s a large 300ml bottle with a push down dispenser for easy use. It sinks in easily and as I’ve said before, smells awesome thanks to essential oils of sweet orange and peppermint. My hands feel nourished and soft.

R379 and available from Woolworths

Mincer VitaC Infusion Handcream

Next on the list is Mincer VitaC Infusion hand cream; I’ve blogged about this brand before read here as a budget friendly and great skin brand. Vitamin C brightens skin and the antioxidant properties help fight free radicals and damage caused by UV radiation. Vitamin C also boosts collagen production for plump and firmer skin. Mincer VitaC Infusion hand cream sinks in easily and has a light citrusy smell; this sits in my desk top drawer which I use throughout the day. R85 available from Foschini

Woolworths Lemon Verbena with yoghurt & honey extracts

I was given Woolworths Lemon Verbena Hand Cream to try out when it first became available and I adore the smell ;(I tend to buy products because they smell yummy as it adds to the loveliness, don’t you think?) This hand cream I carry in my handbag and is almost finished as I use it whilst sitting in traffic as the smell lifts my spirits! Did you know lemon verbena prevents excessive oxidative stress meaning it can boost your immune system? It has also been shown to reduce inflammation and help to relieve anxiety, (I think I’ll look into a tea version too). The hand cream contains yoghurt and honey to replenish moisture, has no Parabens or synthetic colours and is R24,99. There’s a special on at the moment at Woolies – ‘Buy any 3 and save 20%’ shop here

Bare Luxury by Morgan Taylor orange & Lemongrass energy hand and body lotion

Bare Luxury by Morgan Taylor Orange & Lemongrass Energy has wonderful hydrating properties and smells heavenly! I keep this one next to my bed to rub in over my body and into cuticles and hands before jumping into bed. The texture is lightweight, sinking in easily (something you want as its nippy noodles standing in the nude!

Well that’s it for today – so happy Thursday!

YAY for OWAY organic hair products!

OWAY frequent shampoo use hair & scalp shampoo and conditioner

I really love the philosophy and recyclable packaging behind OWAY Organic range which inspires an authentic and transparent lifestyle with respect for the environment and attention to detail; I was given OWAY Frequent Use Hair & Scalp Bath and Frequent Use Conditioner to try out and this is what I thought:

OWAY frequent shampoo use hair & scalp shampoo and conditioner

Organic Way (OWAY) uses plant-derived active ingredients from botanicals sourced from South America, Africa, Indonesia, Indochina and Australia and is the first hair and scalp treatment line to use essential oils and pure micronized plants from biodynamic farming, which means superb care for the consumer. Biodynamic farming has a holistic, egological and ethical approach to harvesting ingredients which results in zero chemical use, maintains soil fertility and focuses on a harmonic relationship between plants, people and animals.

OWAY is also the first professional haircare line to focus on unnecessary packaging, by only using glass or aluminium which are protective and recyclable materials and is based on a 0-mile biodynamic extracts. This means using only the necessary tools exclusively in eco-sustainable paper, metal, cotton, wood natural materials that convey authentic sensations.

‘For our bottles, we only use glass. Why?

*Glass is the best packaging for foods, medicinal products and cosmetics because it protects in a pure, hygienic and safeway

*Glass bottles and jars are 100% inert: this means that, unlike plastic, they do not release substances into the product contained in them

Glass is composed of raw materials found in nature and is completely recyclable and reusable.

For our tubes, we use only aluminium, a very special material that offers many advantages:

*Aluminium is ideal for packaging because it is lightweight, malleable, impact- and corrosion-resistant

*It guarantees a barrier effect that protects the product against light, air, humidity and bacteria. It is perfect for both cosmetics and food products.

*Like glass, it is 100% recyclable and infinitely usable. Owing to the constant increase in the quantity of recycled goods in Italy, the availability of recovered raw material replaces new raw material more and more.

The biodynamic method is the purest and most effective way of cultivation which is free from synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, respect the environment and plant life and, of course, hasn’t been tested on animals.

OWAY Frequent use hair hair & scalp

So now I’ve given you a bit of backgorund on the brand, what do I think of these lovelies?

OWAY Frequent Use Hair & Scalp Bath smells lemony and is gentle enough to use frequently. It doesn’t lather as much as prior shampoos I’ve used which takes time to get used to, but my hair felt super clean and smelt deliciously lemony. Organic white tea is good for anti ageing properties, with Chestnut to strengthen and moisturise, whilst Anisata offers antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

ZAR360 for 240ml

OWAY Frequent Use Conditioner contains biodynamic lemon to revitalise dull hair, organic white tea and Vitamin C for anti ageing and Anisata for soothing and antibacterial properties.

I was thrilled to see my normal frizz take flight! The conditioner didn’t weigh my hair down and my hair actually feels softer!

I am trying to live a cleaner and more holistic way of life so am super excited to use and know more about this brand that is currently available in Sorbet Drybars and Sorbet Man Stores aswell as Lighthouse Wellness Brands 011 262 2451.

Yay for OWAY!

Hope you get to try OWAY out – they are my number one go to from here!

Happy Tuesday!!
