Dermalogica Latest Offerings: Rapid Reveal Peel

If a dull, dehydrated lack lustre skin is your concern you’ll understand my little jump-for-joy moment when Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel dropped; whether you’re wanting to enhance your professional skin treatments or a hectic lifestyle doesn’t allow time for professional peels, the at-home Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel is for you:

Cell turnover is the process of our skin producing new skin cells that travel from the lower part of the epidermis to the top layer and then shed off the skin. As we age, the cell renewal process slows down considerably resulting in a longer recovery time.

How can peels help?

‘Peels remove all that dry, dull debris and reveal the softer, smoother skin underneath’, says Charmaine Cooper, Education Manager for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. ‘In as few as three treatments, peels can reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines, smooth skin texture and even reduce the appearance of breakouts”.

What’s the difference between an at-home peel vs Professional peels?

Home-peels are self-applied with the concentration of the peel being much less than than that of a professional peel done by a trained therapist or medical practitioner. Because of a higher content of active ingredients in the latter, redness and peeling could occur.

Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel is the highest strength exfoliators in the Dermalogica retail line and is super effective with no redness or peeling occuring. A complex of phytoactive Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Lactic and Salicylic acids) helps reveal firmer skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Fermented plant enzymes evens skin tone and accelerates cell turnover, while Australian Caviar Lime Extract smoothes and brightens for a more radiant complexion.I have been going to dermatologist Dr Dilshaad Asmal at Rondebosch Aesthetics for regular peels and DermaPen, but find this at-home peel a great in-betweener for an extra boost of cell turnover; recommended to use at night in your beauty routine.

In three quick steps here’s how to use Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel:

1. Twist open the applicator and dispense into your hands

2. Lightly massage over your face and neck in a circular motion. Wait 3-7 minutes for it to activate (a slight tingling may occur)

3. Rinse off thoroughly with cold water

For an optional Kick-Start Phase you can up the use of a tube every three days. After the third day use one tube once a week.

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Sculpting Gel

Elizabeth Arden’s latest product Ceramide Lift and Firm Sculpting Gel is extra appealing as not only does is contain anti ageing properties, but comes with a roller applicator designed to lift, tone and tighten the facial contours of the face and neck.

Coincidentally my current favourite song is “Gravity” by Sarah Bareilles and I thought how apt as I sit writing about this product aimed at firming and tightening sagging skin! When skin loses elasticity, gravity makes eyebrows and eyelids droop, creates a looseness under the jaw and cheeks, (jowls and “double chin”) and lengthens ear lobes, (say whaat!) You cannot fight gravity, but luckily there are other factors you can control, especially how to protect your skin from the sun and a multitude of fabulous beauty treatments, gadgets and products!

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Sculpting Gel is packed with hydrating Hyaluronic Acid and Commiphora Mukul Extract to smooth skin and minimize lines and wrinkles, Acetyl Octapeptide-3 peptide to help plump skin; Acetyl Tripeptide-2 peptide supports collagen and elastin, Hibiscus seed extract is rich in anti oxidants, plus Ceramides 1, 3, and 6, all critical for helping skin retain water, regulate cells and help repair skin’s natural barriers.

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Sculpting Gel

How to use it:

Swivel the nozzle to ON, squeeze a little gel out before swivelling applicator to OFF. Gently massage with the roller in an upward movement on your face and neck, until the gel is dry. Using a massage roller stimulates blood circulation, promotes lifting and redefines the face contours. Use over your moisturiser day and night.

I really am enjoying using this as it’s fuss-free, non-sticky and absorbs easily into the skin. I’ve only been using it for a week, so can’t say I’ve seen any dynamic changes as yet, but I’ve included a home user consumer perception test done over 8 weeks in the US on 55 women ages between 40- 60 years old, using the Lift and Firm Sculting Gel and am hoping I see these results too!

  1. 92% of women reported that skin felt softer

  2. 90% of women reported that skin looked and felt smoother

  3. 84% of women reported that skin looked healthier and more youthful

  4. 80% of women reported that their skin and neck looked firmer

Have you tried any ofElizabeth Arden’s Ceramide products? My favourite are still the Advanced Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum; so good as an on-the-go product! I wrote an earlier post on these, read here

African Extracts Rooibos Advantage Range ⎨REVIEW⎬

“Using green Rooibos extract was found to be effective in limiting cell damage caused by environmental factors, even in precancerous skin cells.”
-Dr Tandeka Mgcwebeba, Researcher Stellenbosch University

The basis of African Extracts products is Bio-active Rooibos from fresh green rooibos plants harvested in the Cedarburg district. Rooibos is high in antioxidants, zinc and ascorbic acid and renowned for anti-inflammatory skin soothing and protective properties. I tend to try out oodles of products mixing and matching as I go along so this was actually an interesting trial for me to use three from one beauty brand at one time. I tried the range during winter when my skin was feeling somewhat dry and dehydrated (heaters and air conditioners aggravate this); besides loving it as a local brand, the price point is also good! Here’s what I thought:

AFRICAN EXTRACTS ROOIBOS Intensive Day Cream Advantage with SPF15

Active ingredients include advanced anti-aging complexes, Pronalen EAP™ with lady’s thistle, horse chestnut, green tea, germinated wheat which all help with puffiness, firming and tightening and fighting free radicals in the skin. Pronalen BioProtect™, (as the name suggests) protects skin from harmful effects of pollutants and UV radiation thanks to ginseng, apple, peach, wheat and barley! It has a gentle fragrance, is lightweight and easily absorbed.

AFRICAN EXTRACTS ROOIBOS Firming Night Cream Advantage

This contains active ingredients like its day cream partner with added Vitamin A, E and C for boosting moisture, firming and tightening properties. It’s a little richer and I found it perfect for winter evenings when one needs an extra boost of moisture and nourishment!

Besides the standard Bio-Active ingredients found throughout the range, added apricot seed, grape seed oil, jojoba, and aloe leaf extracts gives a gentle creamy granular rub-a-dub-scrub! I mixed it with a little water for a creamy scrub and it left my skin feeling super smooth and clean, perfect for dry and mature skins.

African Extracts is available from Dischem, Clicks and selected Pick n Pays and Spars countrywide.

REVIEW: Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Range

clarins hydra essentiel range

I’ve long been a fan of Clarins products, especially the anti-ageing Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil and Clarins Double Serum, so was super keen to try out some from the latest Hydra-Essentiel range. Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Bi-Phase Serum, Clarins Hydra-Essential Moisturizer Silky Cream and Clarins Hydra-Essential Cooling Gel landed on my doorstep so I put them to the test! Here’s what I thought:

The key ingredient in Clarins Hydra-Essential range is a hardy plant found in NE Madagascar, called Kalanchoe, or ‘organic leaf of life’. Scientists uncovered a powerful natural hydration activator in the succulent that boosts the skin’s hyaluronic acid production, (just what we need as the production of hyaluronic acid slows down dramatically as we age!)

Add environmental extremes, temperature changes, pollutants and stress factors, skin’s self-hydrating power decreases so skin becomes even more dehydrated.

So what did I think of these pretties?

I am somewhat heavy handed when it comes to applying serums as I love the way they sink instantly into skin; directions advise one pump of product, but I go for two because I like even numbers…one…two! This serum gives an extra boost of moisture, thanks to key ingredient, Kalanchoe, a remarkable plant which enhances the skin’s ability to retain precious moisture for intensely hydrated skin.

clarins hydra essentiel silky cream

Heaven in a jar! My skin felt instantly quenched, hydrated and nourished from the very first application. A rich and thick texture which I prefer using throughout winter months as it feels like my skin is getting extra nourishment; the cream doesn’t just ‘sit ‘ on the surface, but really sinks in. I used it twice a day after applying the serum.

I have included Clarins Hydra-Essential Cooling Gel (R540), which is actually for normal to combination skin; I tend to use products for normal to dry skin (and anything that says ‘anti-aging’!), but I loved the Cooling Gel’s consistency, is super lightweight and fabulous and worked as a midday skin pick me up! It also contains Beautyberry extract for radiance, so yes please! Would I use these products again? Most definitely, but would change up by using the silky cream at night as it’s rich enough and include a product with added SPF like Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Day Cream SPF15, (R560) to protect against the elements. I’m a great believer in mixing up and trying out new products; sometimes it sounds daunting, but it should be a fun and sensorial experience!
