WHIMSICAL & MAGICAL: Coucou Illustrations

coucou illustrations

Looking at the gentle washes of colour by 21 year old French illustrator Cecile, aka COUCOU_ILLUSTRATOR, on subjects like pugs, foxes, flowers and more really makes my heart happy. So young, fresh and talented! I’m deciding on a purchase, but can’t decide which one as they are all just so lovely!

On her illustrations Cecile says, “I post my illustrations on social media under the name ‘Coucou Illustrations’.’Coucou’ is a French word I always use to say hi, (it is a bit childish, but I love it!). I find it kind and warm and comforting. I really wanted my illustrations to get the feeling of friendliness and happiness, so I decided to use this name. I really enjoy faded colours, simple shapes and patterns – though, once in a while, I like to let aside my watercolours and use my coloured pencils for a bolder, more colourful drawing. I also like to play with black and white drawings and add bits of colour here and there, to let some elements pop out. I like to think my drawings can sometimes look like old pictures, with these greyish colours. At least, that’s what I try to create most of the time!”

I rounded up some of the ones I really love – take a peek!

(I love this one as a gentle reminder to take time to contemplate life and enjoy a cup of tea)

(I remember we had typing as a compulsory subject in grade 9 which was so boring except for our introduction where our teacher belted out the music for IPI TOMBI as it had good rhythm to type to – how funny!)

(Say it with flowers)

(Life is a bowl of cherries… or strawberries are just as good!)

(In my head I see stars and flowers; the eternal optimist)

(Imagine this as wallpaper – nice huh!)

(Pug love!)

(What could be nicer than a fresh bowl of strawberries?)

(My favourite animal)

(Teepees remind me of summer holidays spent in Vermaaklikheid where the house overflowed with people, so a teepee was erected every holiday to accommodate the kids)

(This one reminds me of my mother’s jerseys she would knit for my dad – splashes of colour woven together with intricate patterns)

(A handful of flowers)

(How lovely are these characters! I always wanted to be a trapeze artist in a circus as it seemed so glam and thrilling, but we moved to a small town so my dreams stayed in my head)

We went to an awesome launch a few weeks back at the stunning Harbour House in Kalkbay, where Elemis launched their Mindful Collection of Bath and Shower Elixirs; five essential modern aromatic blends for body and mind, each to match your mood. Add 3 capfuls to running bath water, or apply directly to skin whilst showering for a sensory experience.

The combination of Bacuri, Sweet Almond, Poppy Seed and Amaranth blended with up to 19 essential oils form a unique synergy found in all five elixirs. Our water shortage has us Kaapies taking quick mindful showers, so I have only rubbed an oil on my body pre-shower, breathing in the heavenly scent, but am hankering after a long soak in a bathtub using an elixir. The miniatures (below) are the perfect travel companion, so I am ready to go road tripping soon..very soon!

Oh lors, that’s a tough one.

Your greatest influence over the years has been

Biggest extravagance

Not sitting in the back of the plane.

And lastly tell us about your signature red lippies & nails

I don’t know where the whole bright red glasses, lips and nails came from, but I don’t feel properly dressed without them. I love Mac Ruby Woo lipstick and OPI Big Apple red nail polish.

BEHIND THE MASK: Prevage City Smart Double Action Detox Peel Off Mask

Prevage Elizabeth Arden City Detox mask

Prevage City Smart Double Action Detox Peel Off Mask is something I have been dying to try out since it first launched a few months back and am really impressed with the results!

You may think we’re whipping up a breakfast smoothie with the mention of goji, cranberries, and blueberries, but these are some of the ingredients found in the mask; add Idebenone and Thiotaine, and you’ve got a super concoction of powerful antioxidants to fight against skin damaging free radicals.

Prevage City Smart Double Action Detoxing Peel Off Mask acts like a liquid magnet removing impurities whilst resurfacing skin and enhancing it’s natural detoxification system. It’s super easy to apply over your entire face and neck, just avoid the sensitive eye area. I applied a generous amount creating a thick layer and waited twenty minutes before lifting it off from the sides towards my nose; its a gel formula so it’s easy to manipulate and pull off. Tree mushroom extract has astringent properties to help minimize visible pores, whilst a smart Polymer blend resurfaces skin lifting away impurities, so when you peel the off mask you experience a brighter, renewed and fresh skin as oils, pollutants, and grime have been removed.

Just a heads up if you’ve had laser resurfacing, dermabrasion or deep chemical peels wait a week before trying out any Prevage products as you may experience a skin reaction.

So it’s all very well for me saying yay, I love, but what do the studies reveal?

95% agreed to skin looked clearer after just one application

93% agreed their pores were visibly reduced after two weeks

93% saw a brighter complexion after just two weeks

Available at Truworths, Foschini, Red Square and Woolworths

FASHION : OMVLI Bags & Accessories

The name OMVLI means ‘source of life’, consistent to designer Somila Tshazibane’s aim to create bold and timeless pieces that echo the African heritage. His focus is on creating accessories and shoes that incorporate cultural influences of amalgamated African textiles and visuals.

” I draw my inspiration from the culture and diversity of Cape Town and I’m influenced by the experiences I have felt, rather than what I have seen,” says Tshazibane.

His latest bag collection is made from the dense woven fabric Hessian. “The products were inspired by the nomadic culture and the textile gave us the direction on what and how we designed the products for this collection”, says Tshazibane.

Another wonderful find on Instagram is local company CaBo botanically inspired products. Besides ceramics and glassware, CaBo also custom designs and manufactures products for coffee shops, wine farms and corporate gifting companies.

The name derives from Portuguese descent. ” The first European to reach the Cape was the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, who named it the “Cape of Storms” (Cabo das Tormentas). It was later renamed by John II of Portugal as “Cape of Good Hope” (Cabo da Boa Esperança) because of the great optimism engendered by the opening of a sea route to India and the East. ”
