CONVERSATIONS with Hairstylist David Gillson

IMG_9764My thick, frizzy and tangled hair has always been the bane of my existence. Sure, it doesn’t help that I rarely run a comb through it, but since having my colour and treatments with hair guru/stylist David Gillson, my hair has improved dramatically. Not only does he get my colour perfect every time (anyone who has gone blonde can attest to what a feat this is) but every time I leave his salon I feel like a million bucks. Thanks to lockdown, I’m missing David. Hair aside, (I’m making peace with my roots…!) our appointments are also a great chance for a catch-up. So I thought I would see how he is doing and what makes him tick via a good old-fashioned email:

What’s your earliest childhood memory?
Being in the Yorkshire moors.

What does a normal day for you involve?
Not so normal at the moment! I wake up to meditate for longer with more
powerful sessions during the lockdown, but usually, it is drinking a coffee
before dropping my daughter off at school and am at work by 7:00. I work
between Rosebank Melrose Arch and Hyde Park, but my routine is the same
every day. I do Reiki one a week and like to get home early enough to cook, a
great passion of mine!

What do you do to relax?
Meditation, Reiki, walking and watching TV series.

Hair stylist David Gillson
David Gillson

A life mantra?
A positive mind brings a positive life.

Which living person do you most admire?
Deepak Chopra.

Your favourite fashion item…
Cashmere jerseys (especially my Valentino’s).

The most memorable gift you have ever received?
A trip to Monte Carlo!

Hair stylist David Gillson
One piece of advice you’d give the next generation:
Do what you love; life is too short to be in a career or job that you are not
passionate about.

Your favourite travel destination?
I’m obsessed with London so feel blessed to have a salon there and get to
spend so much time between here and London.

What’s on your bucket list?
A fabulous trip to Japan.

CONVERSATIONS: YOU & ME: Jeweller Janine Binneman

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

I adore this woman Janine Binneman who makes the most appealing and enchanting pieces of jewellery, so I decided to find out more about her inspirations, her bucket list and what she’s currently working on:

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

Did you always want to be a jewellery designer?

I always loved making things as a kid; I would mission around with a pair of scissors, glue and a stapler! I had a troop of paper dolls with hand coloured dresses, baby dolls with tiny handmade shoes and Ken Doll who I blinged out to the max!

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration is without a doubt the biggest ‘Rockstar Chick’, Mother Nature.

Just look around – the Ombre colours in the changing seasons, the vibrant colours of the sea and the way the light changes colours we see on a daily basis!

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

What are you currently working on?

I’m obsessed with Gemstones (another one of Mother Nature’s gifts) and currently planning my next gemstone hunting trip to Asia in September. I am working on a gem focused line which I’m not too sure of the deets, but watch this space; there will defs be loads of colour!

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

What does a normal day involve?

Each day is crazy busy and totally unique. I’m lucky enough to see clients daily as I love the vibe they bring into our creative space. I get to make their bling dreams come true, which it epic.

I spend time designing, playing with gemstones, drawing and hand colouring each client’s design, (I’m old school like that). I work on the quotes for all the pieces, whilst getting to the daily grind of emails and correspondence. When I’m lucky I get a few hours at my jewellery work bench, but this is happening less and less as my business grows. I end my day off, generally after hours, by catching up on all my Istagram DM’s as I really love connecting with our tribe.

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

Your vice?

My Vice is Bubbly, the drier the better!

How do you switch off?

I switch off by reading for about an hour or two every night before I go to sleep as it stops me from making never-ending lists of what needs to be done tomorrow and the anxiety that goes hand in hand.

I start every Monday with a killer training session with two friends and a hard-core trainer as this keeps me focussed, fit and gets me ready to kick the week’s butt. To calm me down, I do Yin Yoga and aerial yoga weekly.

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

A mantra for life?

My mantra is “ Mermaiding to the Max”, living my life as me and doing as much as I can in the best possible way that is totally me.

Beauty product you love?

My top beauty product is my Vichy BB cream with SPF50. I carry a tube in my bag and never leave the house without it on my face! It has great coverage, is non-sticky and a high SPF!

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

What living person do you most admire?

I admire strong, unapologetic women like Pink, Brene’ Brown, Shonda Rhimes.

On home soil I admire a friend of mine, Abigail Sheridan, who started Chic Mamas do Care– a charity that collects and sells previously loved clothing. All the funds goes into educational projects focussing on preschool learning and school readiness. In the short time of 5 years we have raised over R5 million that has been redistributed into our local communities. This was her dream and it is now a reality. The only way to change our future is to focus on our kids education. I feel super proud to one of the trustees of Chic Mamas.

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

Greatest extravagance?

My greatest extravagance is buying Gemstones- lucky for me, I can sell them! I get the adrenaline buzz of hunting them, the retail therapy of paying for them and then the joy of seeing them go off to live with their new families- seriously it’s the best.

Any regrets?

I don’t have any regrets. I totally believe that the choices I’ve made have brought me to my now and it’s pretty damn amazing! When I turned 40, I decided that I would travel for my work, which I’ve made happen, so I now travel twice a year to go gem hunting!

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

Your favourite travel destination?

I love to travel, it’s up there with my gemstone obsession! I love beaches and islands, (which mermaid wouldn’t)? I’m also a total culture vulture, where Italy holds my heart, steeped in history, the old streets, galleries – total bliss! I hope to spend teh rest of my life travelling!

On your bucket list?

So many things on my bucket list like the Northern Lights, Iceland, Machu Pichu, Peru, the Easter Islands, Madagascar, the Camino and so many others!

JANINE BINNEMAN JEWELLERY

I hope you enjoyed that – I sure did! You see, Janine is full of life, love and everything!!

OH MY GOSH! GOSH COSMETICS INTERVIEW

Founded in 1945 the Danish brand GOSH Copenhagen continues as a successful family owned business, creating and developing an extensive selection of the highest quality products at affordable prices.

I was fortunate enough to interview three of the family members while they were in Cape Town last week to find out more.

From left to right: Bolette Tjellesen, Sales & Marketing, Bo Tjellesen, Owner & CEO and Hanne Zinsli, Vice President.

Why the name GOSH?

BO: My father, Elner, founder of the brand, was an avid crossword solver, where words were his passion. The word ‘GOSH’ has no literal meaning, a magical word that can express excitement or surprise. It resonated with Elmer so registered GOSH as the trademark. (The Copenhagen addition came at a later stage).

GOSH Copenhagen is available in over 90 countries worldwide; what contributes to its success?

We are proud of our Nordic heritage and as a 100% family business, our first concern is listening to what consumers want. We see a younger generation with strong values wanting brands to be environmentally friendly and ethical so it was a natural progression for the GOSH brand to offer vegan products. We say we’re almost 100% vegan, as there is a small amount of beeswax and lanolin used in our lipsticks, to perfume the otherwise unpleasant odour.

What were the first available products for consumers back then?

We had a tag line that was “GOSH make it with your eyes” where we offered 3 mascaras, 3 eyeliners and 3 eyeshadows; from there we expanded our range.

What are the best sellers nowadays?

Prime ‘n Set, the Bombastic mascara and the black eyeliners.

Do you advertise?

No, we go completely by word of mouth and because we are a private family business we can really listen to what consumers are wanting, for instance, South Africans are needing way more foundation shades to accommodate skin tones so this is where we will spend time creating more shades for consumers.

What is the shelf life for GOSH Copenhagen products?

For most cosmetic products the shelf life is 30 months from the day of production. GOSH Copenhagen products are all labelled with a PAO (Period After Opening) symbol. The symbol outlines the shelf life of the product once it is opened. The PAO symbol looks like an open cream jar with a given month.

*Their latest 2018 makeup range is currently available; watch this space for my review!

GOSH Copenhagen is now available to buy online at Foschini and also available in store from Edgars and Truworths.

CONVERSATIONS: You & Me: Glamour Editor Pnina Fenster

Pnina Fenster Glamour Editor

When in Paris….

Pnina Fenster is the launch and current editor of GLAMOUR. Prior to this, she was the launch editor of Marie Claire, and before that, she was an award-winning journalist, Sunday Times columnist, and occasional short story writer and illustrator. She is an unabashed coffee obsessive, lover of all things vintage, happy bookworm, passionate traveller and the recipient of several style awards.

If not an Editor what career path would you have taken?

Outside of editing and writing, I’m fascinated by fragrance, flowers, vintage and the arts, among other things, so those interests might have led elsewhere, but really, magazines and media were love at first sight. And it’s just as well — I really had no idea what I was going to do with my life until the legendary Dene Smuts gave me a career break on the basis of an ocean of enthusiasm and some poetry I’d written along the way.

Pnina Fenster Glamour Editor

With ‘fashion’s most favourite’ milliner, Albertus Swanepoel

How do you draw inspiration from month to month?

In terms of editing, my most important inspiration by far is the GLAMOUR consumer. What is thrilling, concerning, intriguing, delighting her right now? What’s the mood in the air? What’s the conversation on our social media and website? And how can we celebrate and reinforce her self-esteem, style and happiness?

In terms of my personal life, I love the Henri Matisse saying: “There are flowers everywhere for those who bother to look”. Inspiration comes from all over; it could be a book, a TV series, a movie, an image, the sight of the ocean, a piece of music, an open road, traveling, time with people I love, meditating. And YouTube! That’s a galaxy of inspiration at the touch of a button, from spiritual talks and interviews to performance pieces and narrative platforms like The Moth (if you haven’t discovered it, give it a whirl – 15 or so minutes of spellbinding storytelling).

Have you noticed a change in print industry over the last few years?

More than words can say!

How would you describe your style?

Expressive, romantic, feminine, retro.

Pnina Fenster Glamour Editor

What do you never travel without?

A book, lavender aromatherapy essence, a cashmere shawl, perfume and rubber-soled boots for urban exploring. And Uniqlo Heat-tech tights and camisoles – a lesson I’ve learned after years of emergency shopping in the alleged summertime of cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam.

Favourite quote?

It wasn’t given to me in person, but I do love Miss Piggy’s classic wisdom: “Be yourself or it gets really confusing for the postman.”

pnina venster editor of glamour

Love this one of Pnina ‘showered in petals’ at #CHANEL’s rose farm in Grasse for the launch of Chanel’s No.5 L’Eau fragrance

Favourite movie

There are too many to choose just one, but the long list would definitely include a bunch of musicals (from Singin’ in the Rain to Chicago), the Studio Ghibli masterpieces like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, and the great works of genius directors like Scorsese, Polanski and Fellini. And I love the live-stream performances from the National Theatre. All in all, it’s about being shaken to the core by a drama like The Counterfeiters, transported to a world of wonder by whimsies like The Grand Budapest Hotel, or dazzled by the wit and inventiveness of crime capers like American Hustle and Baby Driver.

Would you change anything if you could do it all again?

The standard response to this question is ‘no regrets’, but truth to tell, I would have started saving way sooner, I would never have gone anywhere near cigarettes (I’ve long given up, but why begin in the first place?), and I would have ignored my friend Mervyn when he told me to down a glass of champagne. Never down a glass of champagne!
