FASHION: Bomber jackets

Cathi Trevor model, stylist and writer

THEY’RE THE BOMB!

Bomber jackets have been around for the last few years but even more so this season, with a variety of patterns, textures and colours to choose from. They are a great addition to any outfit; combine with jeans, pants, skirts or dresses and come summer the combination of shorts and sandals will look and feel oh so cool! I’ve been wanting to add another to my wardrobe so thought I’d share some of my favourite ones currently available online or instore:

DENIM DETAILS: Embroidered Denim

Despite doing a major overhaul with my clothing a few months ago there are still some pieces I hang on to for sentimental reasons, like these jeans below. They have no stretch to them, which gives their age away as nowadays most jeans have lycra or elastane added for comfort! I updated mine by snipping the bottoms ala Vetement style and am considering adding a few more patches but I’m not that practical (unlike my daughter who is a wizard with needlepoint and sewing!). She’ll probably be embarressed with the mention, but her pieces are gorgeous and worth a peek: andie reeves

This season sees denim being updated by colourful threads and I’ve selected a few images I loved off Pinterest to inspire you to pimp your denim:

Simple detail on the cuff

How gorgeous is this!

Mixing beading with embroidery threads is worth trying.

I love the use of colourful, textured wool instead of threads.

Embroidering down the seam seems like a doable place to start.

Go bold or…

I love this!

JEWELLERY DEBUT by Kate Moss

Kate Moss jewellery line Limited Edition

PRETTY THINGS

Last week Supermodel Kate Moss launched a limited edition jewellery line where she collaborated with her friend designer Ara Vartanian to create the Kate Moss x Ara Vartanian line.

Kate’s keen we get on board with the ‘mix ‘n match’ earrings trend. She told The Telegraph, “Nobody wears pairs of earrings any more; it’s old-fashioned. I like to throw it on, mix and match earrings. It’s cooler when it’s not styled so much,” so on that note, thankyou Kate, I’ll be grabbing my (many) mismatched earrings and wear them again!

Inspired by the mystic and old English legends, the limited collection consists of garnets, rubies, citrines, amethysts and diamonds set in 18kt gold. Shot at Kate’s house in the Cotswolds by photographer Fenton Bailey featuring Kate and four models from her own agency, Kate Moss Agency.

Pieces available Harvey Nicols or Ara Vartanian store.

WALK THIS WAY: Coast and Koi Shoes

Coast and Koi

STEP OUT

I first spotted these beauties on a friend of mine’s feet and promptly Googled Coast and Koi, without realising this local designer, Caryn Wilensky, has made a name for herself not only on the local but also international fashion front!

Sumptuous fabrics and hand-beading make these bespoke shoes a walking piece of art.

Caryn’s timeless creations are so unique they caught the eye of Raquel Medina-Cleghorn, a fashion stylist who was sourcing for acclaimed New York stylist Bill Mullen, which led to Coast and Koi shoes being featured in a 9 page spread for Ideat magazine, France, shot by renowned photographer, Bettina Rheims.

From there Caryn’s shoes were recommended to Reem Acra, designer to the stars like Madonna, Beyonce and Angelina Jolie (she most recently hit the headlines as the designer for Melania Trump’s inauguration gown). Reem Acra even has pics of herself wearing Coast and Koi shoes on Insta – not too shabby!

BEYOND BUTTS: Spanx Does Leggings

Spanx

“It all started with a pair of pantihose, some scissors and a bright idea” – Sara Blakely

Do you ever go “Damn, why did I never think of that?” That’s what I feel about the magical Spanx products. I recently read an article on the founder and owner of Spanx, Sara Blakely, and not only did she find the gap in the market for underwear (you know, the one that holds all your bits and pieces firmly in place and gives you a sleek silhouette), but she’s also smart, witty and a real supporter for women. Check out her instagram for inspirational ramblings and posts!

Spanx has extended the line of shapewear into their first-ever cotton leggings, which have the magic formula of Spanx in them.

”Leggings are one of the easiest trends to work into your wardrobe, but one of the hardest to wear,” says Blakley. “Thanks to SPANX all women can get a leg up on the trend”.

What are the materials and colours in the line?

Black: slim-fit with brushed jersey material, structured fabric and built-in shaping waistband.

The faux leather leggings come in black, silver and burgundy, are slim built in to keep you comfortable and confident all night long.

Then there’s the “jean-like” leggings (sort of like jeggings, I guess, but with the slim built in waistline).

The price point is somewhat high, at around R2118, but you can justify them with loads of wear as leggings go with everything and they’re super comfy!

Layer with jerseys, coats and boots for a day-wear look, or wear with sneakers to the gym for a workout. Personally would stay clear of white leggings as I think they show tell tale signs of wobbles and cellulite so stick to black, grey and burgundy (a big colour trend for winter!). And please avoid the cameltoe look by wearing tops that cover bum… Need I say more?

STOCKISTS

THERE'S NO HIDING FROM THIS: Camo Jackets

Over the years I’ve always had at least one camouflage item in my cupboard and reckon it’s a trend that never seems to go out of fashion. The one I am wearing above I “borrowed” from my daughter who bought it from H&M while living in London and I’m hoping she doesn’t decide it actually looks better on her and nab it back!

I’ve rounded up a few shirts and jackets that are in store right now.
