Ramblings of a blogger: Being vulnerable

muizenberg sunrise

Monday comes around way too quickly for my liking, but here we are a new week, a short one at that and I thought I ‘d share a moment or two.

CATHI TREVOR

Spring buds are blossoming all over the world, yet here we are in the throws of autumn and already I’m wondering how much longer I can bear the coldness of Dalebrook tidal pool. My swimming partner, a wonderful lady was taken to hospital three weeks ago and I miss her terribly, her sprightly attitude to life and energy inspires me to always look on the bright side and take the bull by the horn, but at this moment she lies in hospital with her tired body trying to mend, gasping for life and I wonder at the fragility of it all?

KALK BAY

On Saturday I got up early as usual and took a brisk walk with hubby to the beach, plunging into icy water, (the temperature read 16 yet it felt so much colder) and I stopped mid length to take it all in; the brief breathing space between sky and sea and a sense of perfection.

DALE BROOK KALK BAY

Earlier in the year I had a brief lapse of finding it unbelievably hard to name three things I was grateful for each day, a ritual I have done on countless mornings. It hasn’t been an easy year with personal issues, loss and sadness, where in the depth of the night I lie awake and wonder if things are going to get easier? In those moments I have to remind myself about the little things like the love of my partner, family and friends, a job I love and to be kind and gentle to myself.

GRATITUDE QUOTES

We have just put our beautiful dog down who shared our life for sixteen years. My daughter said her goodbye last weekend and it broke my heart as we remembered the day we brought her home so many years ago and all the years that followed. I’m sure Roxi felt our love before she closed her eyes for the last time.

Christopher holding Sanuk (passed four years ago) and Andie holding Roxi

Life throws curve balls and I am no different to anyone else carrying their issues, but for a moment I want to feel my sadness and be vulnerable in a space where we so often gallop through the day pushing feelings and thoughts away because it’s easier not to face reality. Sometimes we feel stuck and unsure how to carry on, but I know we need to feel the moments and let them wash over, accept and then let the feelings go.

I’m jabbering on, so I shall stop now, take a deep breath and jump back into this wonderful day where the sun is shining and there’s coffee to be made!

Wishing you all a happy Easter Monday and week up ahead.

Ramblings of a Blogger: Wedding bells, DermaPen Needling and Collagen Lift

franci berman

A month ago exactly my niece’s wedding brought the family together to celebrate her beautiful day and as she has converted to Judaism was even more special as we shared Shabbat two days before, with her doing the blessings. I’m so proud when I look at this incredible human being who has moved to the other side of the world to live with the man she loves. I was a happy mama bear as I had my kids home for a few days with time spent laughing, talking and playing the inevitable bananagram- *poor hubby rolls eyes at our very loud shrieking!

I love these peeps: Rebecca, Christopher and Andie

I’ve been testing out some new products and treatments this past month, including Dermapen Skin Needling. I was delighted Dr Dilshaad Asmal got in touch with me to start a skin journey, offering peels and Dermapen treatments from her Rondebosch Aesthetics practice as I had read rave reviews about her and specifically about Dermapen Treatments!

Done under the supervision of Dr Ashmal, Nicola proceeded to work on my face; DermaPen is a highly advanced skin rejuvenation treatment using microscopic needles to penetrate deep into the skin to get a faster turnaround time on building collagen. It targets fine lines, wrinkles and tightening skin and has a high success rate for treating acne scars, stretch marks and keloid scarring. There is no downtime when it comes to DermaPen, in fact, my face looked plump and slightly airbrushed with the thick foundation and SPF applied after the treatment. My face was a little red the following day (nothing a foundation can’t hide) and for two days my skin felt slightly rough and dry, so I upped my moisturiser and slept with a creamy overnight mask and by the fourth day my skin looked amazing. I am due for a second treatment in two weeks time so will report back on how it feels, (I did a video with Dr Asmal talking about the treatment, but my phone sadly flunked out before I could upload it, so I shall repeat the process next time).

It’s recommended to have DermaPen once a month for three months consecutively and thereafter every couple of months for ultimate results.

There’s a special running at the moment for DermaPen at the Rondebosch Aesthetics; check out their Facebook page here:

environ

I’m midway doing an Environ trial with their add-on products from Focus Care Youth+range and enjoying the process so far. I was fortunate enough to interview founder and scientific director Dr Des Fernandes a couple of years back. The cornerstone to all Environ products is that they centre around Vitamin A. ‘Ageing skin is a direct result of sun-induced Vitamin A deficiency. Correct the deficiency and you’ll have more radiant skin’, says Fernandes. I’ve actually got a review going up in two weeks regarding Environ Tri BioBotanical Revival Masque, Avance Elixir and Vita-Antioxidant Hydrating Oil capsules and thank you www.rubybox.com for allowing me this opportunity to share my views! #FocusCareYouthSA #rubybox #FocusOnFlawless

collagen lift

I was sent two boxes of Collagen Lift ampoules which I’ve been taking since the1st October and I am besotted with them as I have seen not only a marked improvement in my skin but hair and nails too! I’m a huge vitamin junkie and firmly believe I am more energetic and healthy popping vitamins; (I know a major amount of peeps say you wee excess vitamins out, but I am generally really healthy, so kudos to vitamins!) So what am I waffling about and what do these ampoules contain? A potent combination of Vitamin C, seaweed and Verisol® Bioactive Collagen are found in each ampoule necessary for anti-ageing concerns. I often bump into Cindy Nell in Gardens Centre and marvel and her great looking skin (read her testimonial here on these. BTW when I went in for my consultation with Dr Asmal, she highly recommended incorporating Collagen Lift into my skin regime, so I was super chuffed to say I was currently drinking them!

So that’s it from this rambler…..let me know if you’ve tried a DermaPen treatment or Collagen Lift ampoules and what are your thoughts?

and….happy Monday!!

RAMBLINGS: A Cinderella facial, a trip back to my childhood town and a damn fine Milk Solutions pedi

I’ve been quiet on my blog for the past fortnight as I took time off to visit my twin and catch up with a school friends reunion in my old hometown. I grew up in the then-small town of George, living on the outskirts where gravel roads and stretches of open fields surrounded our home. Driving back into the built-up suburbs gave me a twinge of sadness for how rapidly things change and grow. But my weekend was filled with laughter and jabberings, sharing memories of shared chocolate milkshakes and plates of chips, remembering buying our first bras, boy crushes and school antics, transporting us right back to when we were ten- I’ve known these girls that long! So many years have passed since we last spent time together, yet I felt a connection and a deep sense of belonging. Despite distance, these friendships remain firmly entrenched, to be nurtured and treasured.

Spending a few extra days with my twin talking and sitting in a comfortable silence was just what I needed to unwind, taking in the clean fresh air, the spectacular mountain range with weather warmer than I can remember in that part of the world! When next visiting the Garden Route, drive into George as it houses some little gems like ceramics at Wonki Ware on York Street or stop in at Outeniqua Farmers Market on a Saturday for local wares, coffee and delish food before taking a drive down to Vic Bay where the water is far warmer than Cape Town.

If you love having a pedi, best you try out Milk Solutions heel peel pedicure at the Camelot Day Spa at The Table Bay Hotel and Spa. What makes it a dream pedi is you get to lie down on a spa bed, tucked up in a blanket while a therapist works on your feet (if there’s a chance of grabbing forty winks during the day I’ll grab it!). The experience is actually far more pleasing and comfortable than sitting in a chair, thanks to Milk Solution’s Pedi Pods, ergonomically designed bowls that avoid discomfort. Using the pods prevents water wastage too!

My feet felt and looked like they were ready for summer sandals, but sadly winter is still here. I skipped the nail varnish as I like to keep my feet polish-free during winter to give them a break. But come summer I can paint a variety of colours!

MILK SOLUTIONS Milk & Honey Sole Saviours Fabulous Feet in a Flash Kit plus Foot File

Best lunchtime spoil, however time and money doesn’t allow me to go off to a spa for a pedi every month, so good news is Milk Solutions has a huge ‘at-home’ selection to choose from. Check out their website here. I’ve been using Milk & Honey Sole Saviour’s Fabulous Feet In A Flash Home-Kit (pictured above) plus a dual-sided foot file to help smooth feet beautifully.

But the best gadget I use with my lotions and potions is Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Foot File Blue with Diamond Crystals (R195) see image below, for ridding tough skin thanks to a roller head that contains micro-abrasive particles with finely ground diamond crystals. It is battery operated with replaceable heads. CLICKS has a deal on some Scholl products at selected stores until 22 August. Click here

Milk Solutions is available online from www.milksolutionsbeauty.com and at selected spas and salons.

CINDERELLA FACIAL

So what exactly is a Cinderella facial? I popped off to The Laser Beautique in Sea Point during my lunch hour where therapist Stephanie explained what the Cinderella Facial entailed, before I lay down and zoned out for a relaxing experience – and walked out with glowing healthy looking skin! I was intrigued by the NIR machine so promptly did a Q & A with Tzvia Hermann, founder and owner of The Laser Beautique franchise; read on….

cinderella facial laser beautique

1.How frequently can one have a Cinderella Facial and can you incorporate it between your ‘normal’ facials?

One can have a Cinderella facial as often as twice a month (every 10 – 14 days), depending on what the clients aim is for their skin.

For best results we recommend combination treatments that target different layers of the skin. Treatments such as microneedling, peels and dermaplaning are great for the outer layers and Laser treatments such as near infrared or radio frequency facials work the deeper layers. One can have a different facial every two weeks and we recommend at least once a month.

2. Is there downtime on this procedure ie. can working women do this during their lunchtime hour?

There is no down time to this facial , if anything coming in at lunch time and returning to work your colleagues will enquire what you did to your skin,as it will have this stunning radiance from the NIR technology combined with the products we use. There may be a bit of redness which subsides in minutes, one may look like they have had a little sun… and this will be from the stimulation of blood to the surface of the skin as well as the heat of the NIR handpiece. I would reapply foundation once the treatment is complete, you will see for yourself the phenomenal results after just one treatment.

3.Is there a treatment specifically for hands in the “Cinderella” treatment?

Yes, we incorporate the same NIR handpiece to treat the hands too. We call this a near infrared hand lift. I often think that clients forget to treat their hands and are more concerned with facial care. How ever as mentioned above, the hands show age quicker than the face and this is due to harsh chemicals our hands are exposed to when cleaning or doing dishes. Also hands are exposed to the sun a lot more than our face. One should have regular hand treatments

4. Is it considered a ‘spa’ treatment or more like having a Dermapen procedure ie lie down on the bed and have it done with no frills attached?

This is where the Cinderella is different from other treatments. Its both pampering and result driven. The treatment feeling like a facial hot stone massage. The heat increases gradually. Our policies and procedures are the same throughout our 11 stores, especially when it comes to treatments that are designed specifically by us. So with the Cinderella treatment, you will lay on the bed, in the winter months you will be cocooned with blankets and towels , in summer you will lay in a treatment gown. The treatment is aesthetic like, with the ambience of a spa. There isn’t really much faffing during the treatment, you are cleansed, exfoliated and then the treatment procedure begins, followed with a mask and various serums and moisturisers.

5. What age can you start having Cinderella facials?

These treatments can be performed on anyone who wants to preventive ageing. I would say one should start prevention and seriously looking after their skin from around the age of 20 – 23

6. Do you do age-appropriate Cinderella facials ie 25 vs 45 years old?

We do tailor make the treatment depending on the clients requirmements. The treatment is more or less the same for all client’s, however the serums and moisturisers should differ as no one has the same skin concerns. Also for clients that are older a unique collagen film mask can be offered which has a whole host of benefits on its own. We would also recommend ultrasound and radio frequency for clients who have stubborn facial pockets of fat for example a double Chin or jowls… We add on ultrasound which destroys the fact cell membrane, painlessly and contours the face as well as tightens loose skin

7. Is a Cinderella facial good across all ethnicities?

Yes it is same to perform this treatment on all ethnicities, as the setting used are determined by a clients skin type according to the Fitz Patrick skin chart.

8. Can this be done throughout the year or is it suggested for only winter time – (naturally one would apply SPF anyway)

This treatment can be performed throughout the year. As part of the treatment and SPF will be applied post treatment

9. Would you suggest having a Cinderella facial two weeks or a week before a Bride’s big day?

I would recommend the bride comes in for the treatment 2 weeks before and then a couple of days just before the wedding, thus her skin will still have that amazing glow. Alternatively a few treatments will do wanders for the brides skin, it depends on the time she has available in the last few months and the budget available. A course of Cinderella facials every two weeks before her wedding would work wonders.

A short synopsis on NIR:

  • NIR or near infra-red skin tightening is a new light based solution for tightening sagging skin, without surgery or downtime.

  • This procedure results in the tightening of the skin utilising safe, infrared light that triggers a biological response.

  • This response leads to collagen remodelling in the deeper dermal layers and can help smooth out fine wrinkles and sagging skin.

  • NIR stimulates the infiltration of fibroblast and the formation of new collagen, enhancing the tightening effect and helping to bolster the skin against future ageing.

  • The presence of healthy collagen in the dermis helps maintain the skins youthful resilience and texture.

  • NIR is useful in any facial or body area, where there is loose or lax skin.

  • Positive and long term results can be found in areas such as the neck, jowls and jawline – areas that have traditionally been difficult to treat in any other way than surgery.

  • It is also useful for improving thin skin or any areas where there is distinct collagen loss.

  • The treatment itself is warm but comfortable, with the skin appearing pink, tight and healthy post treatment.

  • NIR can provide these treatments safely, comfortably and effectively, delivering visible results with little to no downtime after the treatment.

The NIR successfully treats a wide range of areas, including:

  • Skin tightening of body, face, and neck

  • Laxity of post-pregnancy abdominal skin

  • Laxity of buttocks and knees

  • Improving skin quality of décolleté

  • Hand dorsal rejuvenation

Glycerin is used as the base for the NIR for the following reasons:

– It is an humectant, therefore draws moisture from the air into the skin

– Healing, so great for dry & eczema prone skin

– Also great for oily skin issues, helps remove clogged impurities

– Non-toxic, so safe for sensitive skin

– Gives skin a soft supple feeling

How did I like the facial? In general I find facials very relaxing and this was absolutely heavenly where the NIR machine felt like a warm roller moving over my face. It’s a great “non-surgical facelift” with minimal pain, no down time, and at a fraction of the cost of plastic surgery so this is definitely worth doing again!

Ramblings of a Blogger: Book Love, Road tripping and Swimwear

muizenberg sunrise

Sunday morning and it’s way before the sun has even decided to show up; as much as I’d like to sleep in late, my internal clock kicks in just before five so I do a session of meditation and stretches before grabbing my first coffee of the day. I prefer summertime, but there’s something magical about the long winter mornings, with the quacking of Egyptian geese, twittering of birds, the gentle sound of waves and the sun rising across the bay that awakens the senses; good morning world!

christopher van wyk author

I’m reading this fab book by Chris van Wyk called “Shirley, Goodness & Mercy”, about a young boy growing up in a Coloured township during the apartheid era in the mid-sixties. It’s not a book on racial politics, but an account of his upbringing and relationship with family, friends and neighbours in his community; charming and poignant and just a beautiful read which reminds me of childhood days before cell phones, selfies and the power of social media.

I mention the latter as I stumbled across someone who overnight had jumped from 5K to 15K on Twitter and wondered in awe at the power of social media platforms! I remember Chad le Clos in the 2012 Olympics before he had swum his first race; (who can forget his wonderfully proud dad?) and his followers a mere 535, yet after his first race his followers had jumped to 12K and rising. I was super impressed with the phenomenal data transpiring before my eyes. Chad continues to mesmerise us with his swimming feats (and a legit over 200K followers!)- the power of Twitter!

I’ve just started a workshop called “Embracing the Challenge of Awakened Living”, a gentle reminder to be true to ourselves and to others. It’s so hard to put things into practice every day, to break life long habits and try to live a kind life. I read a tweet by Paul Coelho this morning: “ Expecting the world to be fair with us because we are fair, is like expecting the lion not to eat us because we didn’t eat him”.

BUDDHA

As Netflix is relatively new in our household, I have to admit I’ve become completely obsessed with series and reality shows. Peaky Blinders, Top of The Lake, Rita, Queer Eye, re-runs of Project Runway …I really need to put a stop to this obsession of coming home, hoping my other half hasn’t made alternative plans to go out! I shall blame it on the dark winter evenings and ease up sometime! What’s your current obsession?

I can’t believe summer merchandise has arrived full force into studio this week, where I am styling in my standard winter uniform of jeans, boots and polo-neck, while models stand bikini-clad before me! I love my job and team who keep me on my feet with their shenanigans; exclamations of ” oh my God, I’m exhausted”. Listening to their late night and early morning tales reminds me of my own all-nighters where one would go from night time parties straight to a photo shoot. All I can say is makeup artists wove magic as there was very little photoshopping that was or could be done back then. I do remember it was quite a biggie when I shot a Cosmopolitan cover whilst in Jo’burg where the necklace I was wearing needed to be changed, so a new piece was super imposed onto me, as it was easier than flying a model and photographer down to shoot again with the magazine budget and time constraints. I never found out why they changed necklaces, but I do remember the exhorbant jewellery price tag, hence two security guards accompanying the pieces while we shot the cover. That was probably the extent of ‘photoshopping’ and film back then – how things have moved excitingly forward! (Check the price: R3,60!)

cathi trevor for cosmopolitan cover

I’m off on a road trip in two weeks time to see my twin sister; we haven’t spent time together for a while and I’m combining my visit with old schoolfriends revisiting our childhood days of growing up in George. One forgets how glorious the mountain range is and the charm of growing up in a small town!

Watch out for posts I have scheduled for the rest of July: an entourage of lovely summer scents, Giveaways, a Q & and A with Jessica, owner of SWAN restaurant in Cape Town, a couple of fashion posts and an ’empties’ post of some lovelies that have sadly come to an end.

I can hear the birds twittering so I’m off to put the kettle on again

Happy Sunday

monday motivation

It’s Monday mid morning and I’ve been wondering how we got to the fourth of June already. Does anyone else feel like May flew by in a whirlwind? Apart from watching oodles of series, reading and reorganizing my cupboard space by packing away summer and replacing with winter woolies, it feels like I barely accomplished a thing! Another month slipped by and I’m trying not to beat myself up as I didn’t complete my “to do” list I compile every month. It’s so hard not to feel guilty with my lack of discipline and head all over the show for the past couple of weeks, but then I thought back to what I did do in May and realised it wasn’t too shabby after all; here’s why….

monday motivation

Despite not sticking to my regular three posts a week and being less active on my social media platforms, I had a month of catching up with friends and rekindling friendships. We’re always saying there’s never enough time, but I made a conscious decision to make time, for myself and for others. There’s nothing more fulfilling than being with loved ones, hearing their plans, dreams, moans and mutterings. Women need women, to lift each other up by showing support, love and honesty. It’s so hard to do things for oneself without feeling guilty, not being good enough, doing enough and it’s okay, ( I’m convincing myself as I write this to let the guilt go). We need to do more things that make our hearts happy, be grateful for what life offers and if a day goes by without an Instagram post or a tweet, it doesn’t mean the day was lost with nothing to show for it. I often feel our lives are on constant display, and if we aren’t living up to what we think society wants, we fall into a cycle of feeling anxious and panic where we’ll fall off the treadmill and be judged.

monday motivation

So yes, I’m accepting that May is over and reflecting back to evenings with loved ones and lunchtime catch ups with friends that it was enough. So, I shall grab another coffee, take a deep breath and move into this new day…a new month (four days in). May the fourth be with you and I hope your June is a goodie!

PS: I just finished a Danish series called RITA , about a teacher who lives by her own rules; smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and likes to fuck, a lot! But her heart is in the right place and is a phenomenal teacher tackling kids concerns and problems. Check it out and let me know if you enjoyed it and if you have any other Series recommendations.

Happy Monday
